Franklin Williams Named Alpine Certification Manager
Franklin Williams (l) newly named Alpine Certification Manager gets a welcome from outgoing Cert Manager Dave Lundberg (r).
Carl Boyer announced during the recent Alpine DECL Meltdown of Franklin Williams’ appointment as the new Alpine Certification Manager. This position was held by Dave Lundberg who was nominated to the prestigious PSIA Alpine Demonstration Team last spring. Due to the high time demand this new position places on Dave, he decided to step down at the end of this season. Dave will continue to assist in the Certification role and lend his expertise.
Franklin is currently a supervisor at The Canyons Resort. He has taught skiing for 21 years and passed his Level III in 1991 from PSIA-E. He became a PSIA-I DECL in 2004 and was on the DECL hiring staff (examiner) in 2006. He has an understanding of University curriculum with a MS in exercise science. He is an avid athlete being named to the USA Masters Triathlon team. This has lead him to an intimate understanding of other coaching certification processes. Namely USA Swimming, USA Track and Field and USA Cycling. With his interest in flying he has worked his way through much of the FAA flight certifications. This background and understanding of other types of certifications will assist him in making well rounded and knowledgeable decisions.
Thanks to Brian Head for hosting a fantastic Spring Clinic!
There was plenty of snow and great powder Friday and Saturday with Sunday bringing in the sun. We had an outstanding banquet along with a successful silent auction. Afterwards, a fun band, 'Rockin' Pinyan Ranch', entertained us with their great music. If you were lucky enough to be there, you know how much fun it was.
Special thanks to Henry Hornberger, Danny Edwards (both pictured) and the entire Brian Head staff for a great time and wonderful experience. They were terrific hosts.
Crash helmets
The use of crash helmets is compulsory for all Race/Gate events.
According to the FIS:
Helmets with spoilers or edges that stick out are not permitted. Certain helmets must show a smooth top surface for safety reasons. Helmets used in FIS Snowsports shall be specifically designed and manufactured for the respective discipline and shall bear a CE mark and conform to recognized and appropriate standards such as CEE 1077 or US 2040, ASTM F2040, SNELL S98 or RS 98, etc. Soft ear protections are only allowed for SL events. FIS Specifications for Competition EquipmentEdition 2008
As you can see the FIS does not recognize nor probably want to endorse a certain helmet brand. If the helmet has been sold for skiing, which would include any helmet sold in a "ski shop", then it will be suitable for Gate/Race clinics. The participant should realize that there are many choices in helmet selection. The FIS has high standards and there expertise should be taken into consideration for personal helmet choice. The user assumes responsibility for their choice of helmets
