January 2019

Board Meeting and General Membership Meeting

The Board will hold a General Membership Meeting in conjunction with the regular January Board meeting. Members will have the opportunity to vote on an amendment to the Articles of Incorporation and revised Bylaws the Board approved in October. The revisions include required changes in the Articles that will bring them up-to-date and into compliance with Utah law. More details will come via email. PSIA-AASI Intermountain is a member-driven organization, so make your voice heard: come and VOTE!

January 25 at the Weilenmann School of Discovery, 4199 Kilby Road, Park City, UT

One of a Kind Events in January

We have several unique education events planned for January. It's not too late to sign up, so check them out on our calendar:

- Ron LeMaster Lectures (Jan 8, 9, 10 at Park City and Snowbird). "Skiing from the Snow Up: Techniques, Tactics and Biomechanics." Connect what you feel when you ski, what you do and say when you teach, and the basic mechanics of skiing. There's still time to register without a late fee! You can also pay at the door with the late fee.

- National Women's Summit (Jan 15-17 at Steamboat Springs, CO). Join women from across divisions and disciplines for three days of inspiration with top female professionals in the snowsports industry.

- Alpine Pro Instructor Seminar (Jan 17-18 at Snowbasin). This event features members of PSIA's National Alpine Team. Improve your skiing and expand your professional knowledge. Breakfast and apres-ski presentation included.

- Craig Gordon presents Avalanche Awareness (Jan 22). Understand when, where, and how avalanches happen, and get an introduction to backcountry safety.

Alpine Clinician Awards

Every fall, the Alpine team gives recognition to some of our outstanding clinicians. This year they awarded the following:
- Joe Waggoner: The Pepi Award for recognition of long-term/lifetime contribution to the Intermountain Division by a DECL.
- Jo Garuccio: The Junior Award for standout performance by a veteran DECL.
- Roxy Pierson: The Stein Award for standout contribution by a Devo Squad or new DECL.
Way to go Joe, Jo and Roxy!

Member School Shout Out

Happy Anniversary, Sundance!

Sundance Mountain Resort turns 50 this season. Robert Redford bought land in 1969 envisioning the careful growth that is now 44 runs and 450 acres of winter fun. Of course, there's been some art along the way, and a strong commitment to environmental conservation. It's a special place, so head out to one of our clinics there in January, and celebrate throughout the season by checking out the special events on their calendar.

Scholarship Spotlight: Kelly Boardman-Fowler

Thanks to the Brett Chamberlain memorial scholarship, I had an amazing opportunity to attend National Academy 2018 in Big Sky, Montana. National Academy delivered an experience beyond what I had imagined. One of the best things about teaching snow sports has been the possibility of learning from the most skilled people in the business and this is what National Academy is all about. Knowledge was generously shared and participants were genuinely encouraged to become better skiers/riders and instructors. National Academy friendships and memories will last a lifetime. I'm infinitely grateful to have had this opportunity and excited to bring what I learned back to my home resort and I would like to extend heartfelt appreciation for this scholarship.

The deadline to apply for a scholarship is approaching. Get your application in by January 25. Find out more on our website.

Helmets at Park City

Please note that all participants are required to wear a helmet when participating in any event at Park City. Please remember to bring yours, or expect to request a loaner at the rental shop.
